Walks on both days leave the Old Post Office Museum, corner Main Street and Esplanade, Mornington. The Main Street Historic Walk leaves at 10.30am and lasts aprroximately 1 hour, the Historic Esplanade Walk leaves at 1.30pm and also lasts about 1 hour. Vice Prsident Val Wilson will tell the story of her search for her long lost great-grandfather, a search which took her to the other side of the world. Her talk is called “Looking for Henry”. All welcome, cost $5.00 each (and worth every penny!).
As it is now 100 years since the Red Cross started in Australia, Camille Savage will talk to us on the history of the Red Cross. All welcome to what will be a very interesting morning. Usual tea and coffee included in the $5.00 entry.
The Annual General Meeting of The Mornington & District Historical Societ Inc. will be held at the Old Post Office Museum, cnr Main Street & Esplanade, Mornington at 10.30 am Sept. 9 2014. This year we need to adopt a new Constitution as well as receiving reports on the year’s activities.
Meet at the bus stop outside the old Mechanics Institute opposite Ross Street by 8.45am. Back in Mornington around 4pm. The Museum is located at Cowes on Phillip Island and is reputed to be well worth the trip to see it. We hope to get a side trip in to the Nobbies. Instead of a coffee morning this month we invite you to join us on the historic Mornington train. This is to celebrate the Mornington Railway’s 125th birthday and The Railway Preservation Society’s 25th. The ceremony starts at 10am at Moorooduc followed by a train trip to Mornington returning at 11am. We will have a display relating the history of the railway for you to see. Please ring 1300 767 274 to book your place on the train.
This year celebrates the 100th anniversary of the embarkation of the first enlisted men from the Mornington Peninsula to go to the First World War. For this year’s Leslie Moorhead Lecture Val Latimer from the Mornington Peninsula Family History Society will talk about her research for her book “Echoes from the Past”. All welcome, cost is $10.00 each including light refreshment. Enquiries to 03 5976 3203.
Val Wilson will be your guide on this fascinating tour of the Mornington Cemetery giving an insight into the pioneers buried there. Afternoon tea will be available after the tour. The tour takes about 1 1/2 hours so comfortable shoes are recommended. Please be at the Cemetery Gates, Craigie Road 15 minutes before the start. Cost is $5.00 each. Enquiries to Val 03 5975 2958.
For our next coffee morning we have been invited to the new Mornington Fire Station for a talk and tour. Please note the change of date due to Cup and Armistice Days – 10.30am November 18 2014. There is parking available off Separation Street Mornington.
The Society will conduct historic walks on Main Street and Esplanade Mornington. The walks will leave from the Old Post Office Museum corner of Main St. and Esplanade at 10.30 am. Bookings are not required but please be at the Museum 15 minutes before the start to allow time for registration. The Museum will be open from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm on Australia Day January 26th 2015.
