Werribee Homestead Bus Trip @ Depart from bus stop opposite Ross Street Mornington
Mar 24 @ 8:30 am – 4:00 pm

We are offering the previously cancelled Werribee Homestead trip for March 2014 and hopefully the weather and school holidays wont interfer.   Departure time is 08.50am from the bus stop at the Mechanics Institute  Main Street opposite Ross street. We should return by 4pm.  Places are limited so please book early by phoning Janet on 9787 8685.

Our 50th Birthday Party @ St. Marks Uniting Church

The Mornington Peninsula Historical Society was formally set up in April 1964 under the leadership of Leslie Moorhead. Leslie was a local teacher and an avid historian.  We will have a variety of speakers  and a dislpay of some of the first donated items from our collection.

Coffee Morning @ Friendship Room, St. Mark's Uniting Church

Our guest speaker is Mr. Andrew McKenzie OAM who will tell us about his efforts to secure the history of Marysville after the devastating bushfires in which all the photographs, documents and artefacts were lost.

Historical Walks, Queen’s Birthday Weekend June 8th & 9th 2014 @ Old Post Office Museum
Jun 8 @ 10:30 am – Jun 9 @ 3:30 pm

Walks on both days leave the Old Post Office Museum, corner Main Street and Esplanade, Mornington.  The Main Street Historic Walk leaves at 10.30am  and lasts aprroximately  1 hour, the Historic Esplanade Walk leaves at 1.30pm and also lasts about  1 hour. Please register 15 minutes before start time .  Booking not required. Enquiries to Vicky phone 5977 3192.

The Museum is open on both days, Sunday June 8th from 10am – 4.30pm.

Monday June 9th from 10am – 3pm.

“Looking for Henry” – our July Coffee Morning. @ St. Marks Uniting Church

Vice Prsident Val Wilson will tell the story of her search for her long lost great-grandfather, a search which took her to the other side of the world. Her talk is called “Looking for Henry”. All welcome, cost $5.00 each (and worth every penny!).

Coffee Morning – “100 years of the Red Cross” @ Friendship Room, St. Mark's Uniting Church

As it is now 100 years since the Red Cross started in  Australia, Camille  Savage will talk to us on the history of the Red Cross. All welcome to what will be a very interesting morning.  Usual tea and coffee included in the $5.00 entry.

Annual General Meeting @ Old Post Office Museum

The Annual General Meeting of The Mornington & District Historical Societ Inc.  will be held at the Old Post Office Museum, cnr Main Street & Esplanade, Mornington at 10.30 am Sept. 9 2014.  This year we need to adopt a new Constitution as well as receiving reports on the year’s activities.

Bus Trip to The Vietnam Veteran’s Museum @ Bus leaves at 8.45am
Sep 15 all-day

Meet at the bus stop outside the old Mechanics Institute opposite Ross Street by 8.45am. Back in Mornington around 4pm.  The Museum is located at Cowes on Phillip Island and is reputed to be well worth the trip to see it.  We hope to get a side trip in to the Nobbies.   Janet Groves has all the details  about costs and lunch arrangements on 0407 500 510.

125 Years of Mornington Railway. @ Moorooduc Station

Instead of a coffee morning this month we invite you to join us on the historic Mornington train. This is to celebrate the Mornington Railway’s 125th birthday and The  Railway Preservation Society’s 25th.  The ceremony starts at 10am at Moorooduc followed by a train trip to Mornington returning at 11am.  We will have a display relating the history of the railway for you to see. The Annual Leslie Moorhead Lecture @ Friendship Room, St. Mark's Uniting Church

This year celebrates the 100th anniversary of the embarkation of the first enlisted men from the Mornington Peninsula to go to the First World War.  For this year’s Leslie Moorhead Lecture Val Latimer from the Mornington Peninsula Family History Society will talk about her research for her book “Echoes from the Past”.  All welcome, cost is $10.00 each including light refreshment.
