Robert Austin will again be our guest speaker, this time on the subject of Aboriginal Art.
The Society’s next coffee morning is on Tuesday March 14th in the Meeting Room, Mornington Fire Brigade, Nepean Highway, corner of Separation Street, at 10.30am. Cost is $5.00 per person and all are welcome to join us for friendly tea or coffee. Our guest speaker is Keith White who has agreed to step in at short notice to give one of his splendid historical talks. Well worth coming.
Our next coffee morning on Tuesday may 9th in the Meeting Room, Mornington Fire Brigade, Nepean Highway, Mornington (cnr. Separation Street) will feature guest speaker Ian Armstrong. Ian is a well known local collector and archivist and will talk about his collection or at least some of it. Usual entrance of $5.00 per person, so come long and join us for a sociable tea or coffee in congenial surroundings.
On 21st May 1892, 15 young footballers from the Mornington Football Club lost their lives in a sudden squal on the journey home from a football match at Mordialloc by boat. All on board the boat were lost and only four bodies recovered. On Sunday May 21st 2017, Mornington & District Historical Society will hold a Commemoration Event at the Footballers Memorial, corner Esplanade & Schnapper Point Drive, Mornington. The memorial is opposite the Old Court House. It was raised the following year by public subscription. After, a short walk to the Uniting Church in Barkly Street will bring you to the site of a Memorial Plaque also in honour of the lost players.
Our next coffee morning will be on August 8th at 10.30 am in the usual room at the Fire Brigade. Our speaker will be ABC Sports Journalist Paul Kennedy author of the recently published book “Fifteen Young Men” about the Mornington Football Disaster 125 years ago.
All welocome to join us for a great morning for the princely fee of &5.00 per person.
The Annual General Meeting of the Mornington & District Historical Society will be held in the Meeting Room of The Mornington Fire Brigade, Nepean Highway, Mornington at 10.30 am on September 12th 2017. Tea or Coffee will be available after the business bit. All welcome to come hear what the
Society has been doing over the past year. You may even consider volunteering with us.
The Society’s next bus trip is on September 21st 2017 departing from the Mornington Main Street bus stop (opposite Ross Street) at 9.00 am sharp for Point Nepean National Park. On arrival at the Park a bus will take us through the Park to the Point and the Defence Installations, some of which date to the late 1800s and are considered of high historical interest.
Lunch, at your expense, is available from one of the many cafes and restaurants on Main Street Sorrento.

For History Week this year the Society has a new display “Cosy Up for Tea”. This is a display of a craft group’s hand made tea cosies and a chance to see some rarely displayed linen, teapots and other relevant artefacts from the Society’s collection. The display will run throughout October. Entry is free for Seniors on Sunday October 8th & 15th.
As part of History Week this year Val Wilson will conduct her Cemetery Walk on Sunday October 15th 2017. Please be at the main gate of the Cemetery (By the Office) by 1.15 pm for a 1.30 pm start. Val will take you round the graves of the Pioneers. A welcome cuppa will be available after. The cost is $5.00 each and we suggest a comfortable pair of shoes be worn.
This year’s Leslie Moorhouse Lecture is at Beleura House where Anthony Knight will tell us about the history of the house and the legacy left to the community by John Tallis. Morning tea and lunch, for which Beleura is famed, will be served and we will tour the house and gardens.
